March & a Riverside Stroll — A Walk to the Swing Bridge in Swaledale
There’s something quietly hopeful about the first of March here in the UK. It’s not quite spring, and winter still has its grip — but the days feel just that little bit lighter, and the air seems to whisper that warmer afternoons are on their way.
One of the loveliest ways to celebrate that subtle shift is simply by getting outside — even if it’s just for a gentle wander along the river.
The Swing Bridge over the River Swale near Reeth is one of those places that feels like a perfect March outing. It’s a classic Dales walk: pretty riverside paths, open fields, birdsong and that reassuring crunch of mud underfoot. This narrow footbridge is a lovely spot to stop, breathe, and take in the view before heading on to follow the river trail if you fancy a bit more of a wander.
Whether you’re walking just to the bridge and back, or looping all the way around through the fields and trails beside the Swale, it’s an easy-going way to mark that first day of March — a reminder that small steps out and about can be good for the spirit.
So grab your boots, wrap up warm, and see what March has to offer — even if it’s only a brisk, beautiful walk and a moment standing beside the river.
Love,
Heather & Dave xx
